Though millions of people visit Nevada each year, there's only one real reason why anyone ever visits Nevada, and that is to gamble.  As soon as you cross the state border, you'll be attacked by a 24-hour onslaught of neon signs and glittering architecture, each advertising the best odds and biggest jackpots, nowhere more than in the surreal oasis of Las Vegas. Even the smaller and more down-to-earth settlements of Reno and state capital Carson City revolve around the casino trade.
Information for visitors to NEVADA - NV

US 395 runs south from Reno along the High Sierra, past Mount Whitney, Mono Lake and Death Valley. CARSON CITY (the state capital) is 30 miles south of Reno and has some elegant buildings, excellent historical museums and a handful casinos.

Carson City was named for explorer Kit Carson and still has a Wild West history. the Nevada State Museum at 600 N Carson St (daily 8.30 am - 4.30 pm; $3) is housed in the former Carson Mint, it covers times up through the heyday of the 1860s, when the silver mines were at their peak. Along with the many guns and artifacts is the Ghost Town, from which a tunnel leads down into a full-scale model of an underground mine .

Nevada is the largest but least populated state in the Southwest. The main route across Nevada is I-80 which skirts dozens of small towns - Winnemucca, Elko, Battle Mountain - packed with casinos, bars, brothels, and motels. The other main route,  US-50, passes by Great Basin National Park and links up with I-80 at Reno, and then circuits Lake Tahoe.  Route US-95 links Reno and Las Vegas.

Las Vegas - Downtown is southeast of the intersection of I -15 and US-95.  the legendary Strip stretches fifteen miles in all directions, starting two miles south of downtown.

The Strip consists of the four miles of Las Vegas Boulevard between the Mandalay Bay and Sahara, and as far south as McCarran Airport.  All buildings along the way are mostly casinos, clamoring for tourists who flock the road day and night. the South Strip runs from Mandalay Bay up to the MGM Grand and New York - New York. The Central Strip includes Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the Venetian while the North Strip runs from the Stardust to the Sahara.

Downtown Las Vegas has the Fremont Street Experience, in which four blocks have been roofed over to feel like a theme park.  Between the Strip and downtown is the Gateway District comprising gas stations, fast-food drive-ins, and wedding chapels.

RENO on I-80 is known as "The biggest little city in the world."  It has miles of slot machines and poker tables, surrounded by wedding chapels and divorce courts.
The three things to do in Reno is gamble, get married and get divorced. The casinos are concentrated along Virginia Street.
